Weight Loss Menus | Why Will-power Doesn’t Work For Weight Loss

September 5, 2010 – 3:52 am

Right now, I am in my 20′s, and am at an average 165 lbs. But 9 years ago, when I was in high school, I was FAT. Like, 75 lbs heavier than what I weigh now. Oh no!

At first, I tried to get in shape by sheer force, busting my behind working out for an hour a day every day, and cutting my food intake down to just cereal and vegetables. This worked for a while, but it was such an unrealistic plan that I eventually stopped and was back almost to where I began.

But then, I tried again using some new strategies. This time, I succeeded, and have kept the weight off for nine years, with no doubts that I will continue to be successful.

What did I do differently?

1. I went back and looked at the keys to weight loss. Experts say that it’s all about eating less and exercising more. But that’s only part of the picture. You have to do the correct types of exercise. You have to eat the correct types of food. If you don’t, you will only end up looking the same next year as you did last year. I did lots of learning, and eventually found out answers to both of these questions.

2. I changed my focus from the “quick wins” of crash diets and infomercial products to “long-term success” that I could keep for, well, 9 years. Just this one change in mindset had an influence on the kinds of things I did.

3. I tried to introduce changes more gradually by taking on habits little by little. Instead of drastically changing my nutrition, I first cut out pop (which I didn’t miss much) which saved me hundreds of calories per day. Then I started taking a short walk every day. Those actions transitioned into eating vegetables with every meal, and then jogging for part of my daily walk. Before I knew it, I was eating right, and going to the gym several times a week to do serious weight training.

So as you can see, success in weight loss is not only due to WHAT you do, but HOW you do it. And when it comes to weight loss (and other types of behavioral change), the key is to do things gradually, in a way that will help you keep your gains for years to come.
