According to a credible source, French diet guru Michel Montignac, whose ” lowly glycemic food list ” weight-loss books sold millions of copies, has died.

A state officer at the City Hall of Annemasse, in eastern France, said Montignac died on Sunday at a clinic there. The officer declined to provide her name because there has been no approval yet to speak on this subject. The cause of death was not immediately known. His death has been confirmed by his daughter Sybille on her blog, not mentioning the exact cause.

Montignac, who had long struggled with his weight, devised his own diet and after four months on it, he shed 29 pounds. With no medical training, Montignac based his research on scientific papers to create a diet that divided cabhohydrate foods into good and bad, depending on the food’s glycemic idex. Glycemic index is the amount of simple sugar, glucose being released into the blood.

In 1986, he wrote and published “Dine Out and Lose Weight,” selling over 500,000 copies in France. The book was targeted at people similar to Montignac, business executives who reguarly dined at restaurants. In 1987, he wrote the book, “Eat Yourself Slim” which sold over 17 million copies across many countries.

Thirty years later, Montignac’s weight loss miracle based on the glycemic index was adopted by Dr. Aruth Agatston, author of “The South Beach Diet”. It is commonly seen as a food fad diet similar to popular effective weight loss diets such as the Master Cleanse Diet .
